Fly fishing at Poronui is synonymous with gin-clear waters and big brown and rainbow trout in the heart of the North Island’s backcountry.

Often referred to as New Zealand’s best kept secret, Poronui (located just 40 minutes from Taupo), is our very own luxury sporting retreat. Boasting incredible fly-fishing set within untouched wilderness, breath taking scenery and genuine warm hospitality, it has a magical pull that keeps international anglers coming back year after year.

Each year, the Poronui fishing guides count down to the opening of the back-country rivers on 1 October. This season, they are especially passionate about sharing their love of our little-known treasures with fellow antipodeans and seeing them appreciate the magic right here.

Be engulfed by a warm welcome and enjoy unforgettable backcountry experiences, luxury accommodation and gourmet New Zealand cuisine with our special 2020-21 fly fishing packages.

What are the fly fishing seasons in New Zealand?

The seasons in the southern hemisphere are the opposite to those in Europe and North America. Poronui is located in the heart of the North Island of New Zealand and enjoys a temperate climate.

Our Rivers

Two renowned fly fishing rivers run through the Poronui estate. And, with the assistance of a helicopter, you can be whisked away to some of the more remote waterways. Clear, deep pools intersperse surging rapids. Some areas offer plenty of native forest cover while others require more stealth and leave no room for error. Unaffected by snow melt, our rivers open on 1st October each year and offer great fishing from the word go.

Hide away in the wilderness or explore our great Taupo region.

Nestled in the secluded Taharua Valley on New Zealand’s spectacular North Island, Poronui is located in the Central Plateau region between Taupo and Napier.

While Poronui itself is an isolated spot of heaven with onsite activities galore, there are a number of great tourism attractions within an hour or two of the lodge. The Tongariro National Park offers plenty of hiking tracks, while Mt Ruapehu is the best place for snow sports in the winter. Taupo is an outdoor adventurers dream town with bungy jumping, sky diving and jet boats all on offer.
