Food & Wine Weekend With Al Brown And Maude Winery 7-9 October, 2016

04 October 2016

The Poronui Food and Wine Series kicked off this weekend with a celebration of terrific food and great wines.

A special thanks to all our guests including Al Brown and his chef Hayden Scott, and wine makers, Dan & Sarah-Kate Dineen of Maude Winery for joining us and making it a wonderful fun weekend.

Al’s menu and the wine pairing by Sarah-Kate and Dan hit all the right notes. For some it was the Crab and Crayfish Cake w/ Gribiche paired with Maude, Mt Maude Vineyard 2015 Chardonnay while for others the favourite was the Duck A Couple of Ways w/ Cherry and Mushroom with Maude, Mt Maude Vineyard 2014 Pinot Noir.

I simply loved the Crisp Cauliflower w/ Almond Cream and East Meets West 2015 Pinot Noir.

The hint of residual sweetness overlaid with the clean lime juice characteristic of the Maude, Mt Maude Vineyard 2016 East Block Riesling was a superb match for the Kingfish and Wasabi Cerviche w/ Ginger Syrup.

Check out the menu and wine match. Suffice to say Al takes tempura oyster butties to a whole new level!

Steven Patterson, Poronui’s Head Chef, set the bar high with the ‘Ode to the Pig’ on Friday night cleverly served on wine barrel platters.

The surprise element of the weekend was the Chardonnay blending on Saturday afternoon. It featured the requisite amount of friendly banter and downright competition. The winners received accolades from the judges, Sarah-Kate and Dan not only for their blended Chardonnay but also the name and their original tasting notes. The blend was aptly called the Sly Fox.

The bonus was the crisp start to Saturday morning and many of the guests took full advantage to explore the property and add activities.

Goodbyes on Sunday were coupled with the promise of future returns.

Thanks again to all our guests for supporting us this weekend.

But wait there’s more – Al, Sarah-Kate and Dan are confirmed for October 6th – 8th 2017.
