The driven pheasant season at Poronui generally begins in late April and lasts until the end of August, corresponding to New Zealand’s autumn and winter months. Exact dates are confirmed each year, so please contact us for the current season’s schedule.
  • What’s the terrain like at Poronui?
Poronui’s 16,000-acre estate features rolling hills, deep valleys, and plenty of native bush. Drives are carefully selected to provide a good sporting challenge against a backdrop of spectacular scenery for all Guns in the line.
  • How long should I plan to stay for a Driven Pheasant experience?
Most guests choose a two-night stay at Poronui, which includes arrival, a full day of driven shooting, and departure the next morning. Optional extras can be added before or after the shoot, and you’re welcome to extend your visit.
  • How many pheasant drives will I experience in a day?
A full driven day at Poronui includes four to five drives, with breaks for refreshments and lunch. The day typically begins with a team breakfast at the Lodge around 8:00 a.m. At 9:00 a.m., shooters meet their host for a briefing on the day’s events and draw pegs before the first drive begins at 9:30. Lunch is served at the Stables, followed by two afternoon drives. The day concludes with the whole team gathering at the Stables for a debrief and to share stories from the day’s events.
  • Do I need a firearms licence to take part?
If you’re using one of Poronui’s firearms under the supervision of our gamekeepers, then you do not need a licence. However, if you prefer to bring your own firearm, then we can guide you through the process of obtaining a New Zealand visitor firearms licence in advance. The firearm of choice is usually an over and under shotgun.
  • What is the group size for a driven day?
Driven pheasant shooting is definitely a team experience. A full line consists of eight (occasionally nine) Guns, with beaters, dogs, and gamekeepers working with you. This ensures fairness for all guns in the line, as well as the camaraderie and experience of a traditional driven shoot.
  • What do I need to wear?
Most guests enjoy wearing traditional tweed for a pheasant drive, and we’re happy to provide clothing suggestions if needed. Alternatively, comfortable, neutral-colored clothing paired with lightweight boots is ideal. While the North Island enjoys a mild climate, the weather can be changeable, so layers are recommended. We also suggest bringing wet-weather gear so you’re prepared for any rain.
  • Do I need pheasant shooting experience?
Novices are just as welcome as experienced shooters. We aim to provide an experience that’s memorable and accessible to people of all skill levels.
  • Can I add Walked-Up Shooting to my trip?
Absolutely. Walked-up pheasant shooting can be added to your itinerary, either before or after your driven day. Or if you’d like to add walked-up pheasant shooting to a hunting or fishing trip, then we’d be happy to accommodate.
  • What can non-shooting companions do during the trip?
Non-shooting guests are always welcome at Poronui, and can enjoy guided activities such as hiking, biking, fishing, or spa treatments. We offer a range of experiences so that everyone can make the most of their stay.
  • Is shotgun ammunition supplied?
Yes. We supply 12-gauge Gamebore Blackgold Quadseal 32g #5 shot and 20-gauge Gamebore Blackgold Quadseal 30g #5 shot. If alternative gauge ammunition is required, Poronui asks that you choose shotgun shells with biodegradable wads, please.
