Poronui End of Season Report 2006-2007

“The best fishing I have ever had at Poronui.” These words in December 2006 from Bo Ivanovic, frequent visitor to New Zealand and long time Poronui client. Bo’s spontaneous comment reflects two important aspects of the season just past. First, December is a great month for fishing at Poronui and second, our guests generally experienced terrific angling throughout the 2006 - 2007 season.

As with any angling destination, weather is a key factor in determining success, especially in run-off systems such as we have in the North Island. This year we were blessed with a happy combination of just enough rain to keep the rivers fresh without a major event that caused serious or prolonged flooding. Almost without exception the browns and rainbows were in excellent condition with some still rising to the dry fly as late as May. As in the previous season, there were a couple of ‘double digit’ fish landed and the average size of fish generally, was as high as we have seen. For example a fish up to 4lbs in the Waipunga was once considered ‘large’. This season several rainbows and browns in the 6lb range were landed…… one of these turned out to be a personal best for Denise Dangremond. Caught in the last pool of her last day of fishing……. great way to finish your stay Denise! And then there were ‘fish hogs’ like Mike Mercer from the Fly Shop at Redding. Mike hooked 15+ fish one memorable day on the Mohaka in late March. We can’t always promise days like this at Poronui but it’s great when they do happen.

With the sale of Poronui completed, we are delighted to have the Owners Cottage available for alternative accommodation. This impressive residence is approx 10 minutes from the main lodge and is an ideal venue for families or groups of friends traveling together. It is available on a self catering or fully catered basis and is a perfect base to relax and enjoy the outdoor activities available at Poronui.

Two relatively new activities already proving popular are heli-hiking to remote areas of the central North Island, and golf at the new course at Cape Kidnappers in Hawkes Bay. Be sure to talk to our experienced staff when you visit. They can help you plan and enjoy these and the many other activities we have available.

Bookings are already strong for the popular months of January through March…. but don’t ignore November / December and April. The early and late season fishing for the past few years has been marvelous and there are some great deals available at these times. If you are thinking of visiting, get in touch with Eve to discuss options.

Travel is on our agenda for the next couple of months but after this break, we all look forward to seeing you back at Poronui for our 2007- 2008 season.

Best wishes
Eve Reilly and the Poronui team
