You don't need to be an angler or hunter to experience the magic of Poronui. Many of our guests come simply to enjoy a riding holiday or a day horse trekking in some of the most diverse, beautiful and unspoilt scenery in New Zealand.
A Diverse Landscape
Poronui, a remote 16,000 acre high-country property is steeped in New Zealand history. The trails make their way through lush native beech and exotic forests, across Manuka covered hills, open grassland and gentle streams.
Enjoy breath taking views of diverse landscape, the Taharua Valley, Kaimanawa and Kaweka Ranges, and Mohaka River. The views truly capture the uniqueness of Poronui and its varied history.
Expect to hear the song of native birds, see spectacular scenery, a variety of deer species, native birds and a combination of temperate and sub-alpine flora. Gain insight into the pioneering history of the land.
The trails and the terrain are suitable for walking, trotting and cantering, even an exhilarating gallop over the rolling hills!
The Riding School at Poronui
The Poronui horses are New Zealand station bred. They are chosen for their temperament, steady gait and sure footedness. They are kept fit and well schooled ensuring a comfortable, fun ride for all.
Our professional guide comes with extensive experience in the schooling of young horses and ponies, competing and instructing. She knows the property intimately, is passionate about the outdoors, has good knowledge of New Zealand flora, fauna and local history.
She has a good sense of humour and is fun to spend a day with.
The stable complex reflects the detail that goes into creating a world class facility and guests can expect all tack to be of a similar standard.
Numbers per ride are small and governed by the experience of the riders. Lessons are available for beginners and more advanced riders.
A Wide Range of Options
Our rides range from an introductory novice ride to a multi-day trek over-nighting on the way at our rustic-luxe Safari Camp. There you eat under the stars, toast marshmallows on the camp-fire embers and fall asleep to the mesmerising sound of the famous Mohaka River in this completely tranquil wilderness.
There is also the option to bring your own horse. Secure paddocks and a groom to take care of your horse are available. Treks are available September 15 to May 31.
