Guided Hiking

You don't need to be an angler or hunter to experience the magic of Poronui. Many of our guests come simply to enjoy a hiking holiday in some of the most diverse, beautiful and unspoilt scenery in New Zealand.

Combine the exclusivity of Poronui with a heli-hiking adventure into the Kaimanawa Ranges. A Poronui walking holiday provides challenging guided walks, great food, New Zealand wines and elegant accommodation all rolled into one.
Enjoy breath-taking scenery at your own pace.  The varied terrain provides opportunities ranging from casual walks around the Lodge gardens and nearby riverside, to climbing the challenging Spar track - providing a dramatic lookout over the Mohaka Valley.

Special Features of a Poronui Walking Holiday

There are more than 100 miles of roads and tracks that make their way through the hills and beside the streams at Poronui. Guests can enjoy diverse landscapes, ranging from high alpine forests to low open grasslands. On your hikes you’ll discover spectacular views and gain insight into the pioneering history of the land.
This is a unique opportunity to retrace the steps of early settlers, deer cullers, fishers, hunters and pioneering farmers. Listen to the stories of various owners, early farming methods, the many characters who lived here over the years to life today on such a magnificent property.
The property hosts some rare and endangered native flora and fauna and has abundant local wildlife including sika deer, fallow buck and red stags. If you’re very lucky you might spot one of the rare native small-scaled skinks (Oligosoma microlepis) found only in the central North Island.

Add to these, the chance to view the fish and wildlife along the wetland and riverside tracks.  And while opportunities to view deer are a feature of Poronui, more committed wildlife enthusiasts will enjoy the walk though the game estate.  Photographers will enjoy the opportunity to “hunt” deer with their lens, or just capture the scenic highlights of Poronui.

The 6,000 acres of old growth beech forest are a stunning reminder of what much of New Zealand used to be like.  Interpreted walks through the forest give you an insight into the beauty of a New Zealand indigenous forest.  An active pest management program enables many sensitive species to thrive here at Poronui, when in most other locations they are a rarity.
