Guided Walks
There are more than 100 miles of roads and tracks that make their way through the hills and beside the streams at Poronui. Guests can enjoy diverse landscapes, ranging from high alpine forests to low open grasslands. On your riding or walking trips, you’ll discover spectacular views, and gain insight into the pioneering history of the land.
The varied terrain provides a myriad of opportunities ranging from casual walks around the lodge gardens and nearby riverside to climbing the challenging Spar track - which provides a dramatic lookout over the Mohaka Valley. Enjoy breath-taking scenery at your own pace. With so many options available it would be impossible to cover them all in a week’s stay.

Fauna
Added to these are opportunities to view the fish and wildlife along the wetland and riverside tracks. And while opportunities to view deer are a feature of Poronui, more committed wildlife enthusiasts will enjoy the walk though the game estate. Photographers will enjoy the opportunity to “hunt” deer with their lens, or just capture the scenic highlights of Poronui.
Flora
The 6,000 acres of old growth beech forest are a stunning reminder of what much of New Zealand used to be like. Interpreted walks through the forest give you an insight into the beauty of a New Zealand indigenous forest. An active pest management program enables many sensitive species to thrive here at Poronui, when in most other locations they are a rarity.
View endangered species such as native mistle-toe, bush falcons and the rare New Zealand parrot -the Kaka. Learn of the special flora, including their traditional Maori uses for food and medicine, or simply enjoy the peace and serenity of this special landscape.
