When you start fly fishing, it’s important to get the right advice so you don’t develop bad habits. Our fly fishing clinic is fantastic for anyone starting out in fly fishing and is also highly recommended for the more experienced angler looking to improve techniques.
What You Will Learn
Learn all the essentials – from how to assemble your tackle and select a fly, to landing your fish. Get a thorough understanding of fundamental casting techniques as well as knot tying and leader construction.
For the experienced angler learn a variety of casting techniques progressing to the roll cast and even the double haul. We’ll teach you how to play a fish, how to read water and provide a basic introduction to aquatic life in the rivers and streams of New Zealand. You’ll develop an understanding of the fishing skills required to successfully land trout in the different types of water in New Zealand. Leave Poronui confident, ready and capable of catching fish in rivers and lakes.
For the fly tying enthusiast, an introduction to fly tying will also be covered after dinner one evening.
More than a Fly Fishing Clinic
This is an ideal opportunity to learn the art of fly fishing or simply develop or perfect your casting skills with a professional fishing guide. Combine that with great food, New Zealand wines and elegant accommodation in our fly fishing lodge.
Our professional Poronui fishing guides are skilled tutors, and passionate about the outdoors. They have indepth knowledge of New Zealand flora and fauna and local history. Enjoy their company while learning or fine-tuning your fly fishing skills.
We supply all fishing gear – waders, boots, rods, reels, leader, tippet and flies but please feel free to bring any of the above.

This package is NZ $2,800 pp incl GST for a party of two and includes:

Once You have Perfected Your Casting Technique…
As an optional extra, book the helicopter for a day of heli fishing in the surrounding mountains - the ultimate exhilarating experience. The remote mountain freestone streams offer an opportunity for the classic fly fishing experience and anglers can expect to fish in seclusion and cast to resident wild fish that have rarely seen a dry fly. Cost available on request.
