Rugby World Cup
Are you coming to the Rugby World Cup 2011? Whether you’re travelling with a mate, partner, or as part of a corporate group, Poronui can offer you the perfect back country wilderness experience to complement your Rugby World Cup adventure in New Zealand.
Poronui is located 40 minutes outside Taupo, in the centre of the North Island. This high quality sporting lodge is located in pristine New Zealand wilderness and is renowned for its world class fly fishing, free range and trophy hunting, and its warm hospitality.
Teams from Wales, Ireland and South Africa will be training in Taupo during the competition, and match centres can easily be accessed by air from Taupo or Rotorua Airport, or by road. Should you prefer, Poronui is co-located with a helicopter charter team and there is a light aircraft landing strip on the property.
Rugby World Cup 2011 at Poronui
For the period of the Rugby World Cup 2011, we are transforming the Billiards Room in our Stables complex into a Rugby World Cup HQ, with rugby memorabilia, a huge screen and open bar. Gather round the open fire, select from one of the beers representing each of the participating countries, and settle in to watch rugby world cup matches from around New Zealand on the big screen.
For Corporates
If you’re part of a corporate group, you might want to make Poronui your headquarters between weekends in the city soaking up the big game atmosphere. As a climax to your stay with us, we can arrange one of our ‘Ready For the Wild” Corporate Challenges for you and your guests, involving some very special interaction with the NZ wilderness and some opportunities to test yourself and develop new skills. We might even be able to organise a degustation dinner cooked by one of NZ’s top chefs for your enjoyment one evening. Details are available on request. Please contact Eve on +64 7 384 2080 or
email us with your inquiry.
For The Discerning Sportsman
If you are travelling with a partner or mate, then complement your New Zealand experience with some true kiwi hospitality in a pristine and unspoilt part of New Zealand. Kick back and relax in our incredibly beautiful retreat with some early season fly fishing for brown and rainbow trout, partake of some hunting (rusa and sambar will still be in hard antler or otherwise hunt non trophy animals) or try your hand at our Olympic standard sporting clays or archery, horse trekking, wilderness walking, or simply unwind with a massage or a good book.
The Perfect Counterpoint to a Civilised Game of Rugby
Poronui also offers a unique Maori cultural experience on neighbouring Tuwharetoa tribal land.
The Kai Waho experience can be added to any Poronui visit. Kai Waho can be translated as outdoor cuisine. It can also describe a master, or teacher, of the ways of the wilderness. Visit Tamau Pā with your guide Tom Loughlin who, as tangata whenua (person of the land), is not only passionate about his culture, but also a professional chef and expert hunter/gatherer. Tom uses traditional Maori gathering techniques and cooking methods to create a magnificent hangi feast for you to enjoy, while sharing knowledge and stories.
