Special Features of a Poronui Walking Holiday
Combine the exclusivity of Poronui with a walking adventure into the Kaimanawa Ranges. Poronui is a privately owned 8,200 hectare property steeped in local history and situated in the Central North Island only a 40 minute drive from Taupo.
This is a unique opportunity to retrace the steps of early settlers, deer cullers, fishers, hunters and pioneering farmers. Listen to the stories of various owners, early farming methods, the many characters who lived here over the years to life today on such a magnificent property.
The property hosts some rare and endangered native flora and fauna and has abundant local wildlife including sika deer, fallow buck and red stags. If you’re very lucky you might spot one of the rare native small-scaled skinks (Oligosoma microlepis) found only in the central North Island.

What to Expect on Your Wilderness Walk
Walk through native beech forest, manuka scrub, pine and eucalyptus forest and dramatic open grassland. Enjoy breath-taking views of the Taharua Valley, the Kaimanawa and Kaweka Ranges and the Mohaka River.
Enjoy the company of our professional walking guide who is passionate about the outdoors and has in-depth knowledge of New Zealand flora and fauna and local history. Your guide will carry all safety equipment, additional warm clothing and water.
Expect to walk an average of 6 hours per day. Your fitness level should be intermediate+. We recommend the ability to walk 10km including hills with a light pack. You will need to carry your lunch and bottled water (provided) plus your own rain jacket and camera.
The 2 Night / 2 Day Walking Holiday Option
Day 1
Arrive in the afternoon. Orientation and meet your guide.
Day 2
Depart 9.00am by helicopter for a 15 minute one way flight. The walk combines bush trails, river crossings, magnificent river views. The terrain is varied, ranging from open tussock hill walking to steep climbs to riverbank walking. At the end of the day the helicopter is there to pick you up again.
There are a number of different options available depending upon the weather:
- Blue Gums to Waiokaka via Makino Hut and Mangatainoka Hot Springs.
- Boyd Hut to Poronui
- Te Wake Tops.
Day 3
Depart 9.00am on foot for a 25km walk on well formed tracks. The climb during the day is approximately 300 meters through native beech forest, manuka scrub and open grassland.
Day 4
Depart after a leisurely breakfast.
The 3 Night / 3 Day Walking Holiday Option
Day 1
Arrive 12 noon in time for lunch
Orientation and meet your guide
Depart 2pm for a river walk in the Taharua Valley – 12km
Day 2
Depart 9.00am by helicopter for a 15 minute one-way flight. The walk combines bush trails, river crossings, magnificent river views.
