You don't need to be an angler or hunter to experience the magic of Poronui. Many of our guests come simply to enjoy a riding holiday or horse trekking in some of the most diverse, beautiful and unspoilt scenery in New Zealand.
Why You should Experience Riding at Poronui
While the romantic frontier of the US wild west is long gone, you will find horse riding at Poronui gives you access to the wide open spaces and untamed beauty of high country New Zealand. Often compared to a “dude ranch” in the US, Poronui is a thoroughly modern and very elegant sporting lodge were guests can experience trail rides of up to six hours a day with a professional local guide.
Enjoy all the comforts of home, gourmet meals and fine local wines. We can also include an optional sleepover at our Safari Camp
so you can get a taste of the early years in New Zealand - when immigrants settled in isolated wilderness beside wild rivers like the Mohaka and Taharua that run through Poronui.
A Diverse Landscape
Poronui is a remote 16,000 acre property, steeped in New Zealand history, where one can ride in every direction. There are more than 100 miles of roads and trails ideally suited for horse riding on Poronui. These trails make their way through tree-covered hills and cross the gentle streams of the property, offering great views of diverse landscapes, ranging from high-country clad in lush native beech forest to rolling manuka-covered hills and valley floors of open grassland.
Enjoy breath taking views of the Taharua Valley, Kaimanawa and Kaweka Ranges, and Mohaka River. The views truly capture the uniqueness of Poronui and its varied history.
On your riding treks, expect to hear the song of native birds, see spectacular scenery and gain insight into the pioneering history of the land. You can expect to see a variety of deer species, native birds and a combination of temperate and sub-alpine flora.
The Riding School at Poronui
Poronui is committed to an excellent riding program. The Poronui horses are New Zealand station bred. They have all been selected for their quiet nature and steady manner and are schooled and kept to riding fitness throughout the season. During the off-season they roam the hills on the property.
Our qualified guides ensure that elusive balance between sensible safety and a fun adventure. They hold current first aid certificates, carry two-way radios and are attentive to the riders with them. Our groups are usually small (one or two guests per guide) which allows guests to ride to the top of their ability.
The stable complex reflects the detail that goes into creating a world class facility and guests can expect all tack to be of a similar standard.
Lessons are available at the riding school. Our professional riding guide comes with extensive experience in the schooling of young horses, competing and instructing. She knows the property intimately, is passionate about the outdoors and has indepth knowledge of New Zealand flora and fauna and local history.
Choose to ride in either our English GP or Australian Stock saddles. Helmets, gloves, boots and chaps are also provided.
A Wide Range of Options
Our rides range from an introductory one-hour novice ride to a multi-day trek to our rustic-luxe Safari Camp. There you eat under the stars, toast marshmallows on the camp-fire embers and fall asleep to the mesmerising sound of the famous Mohaka River in this completely tranquil wilderness.
There is also the option to bring your own horse. Secure paddocks and a groom to take care of your horse are available. Treks are available 1st September to 31st May and operate Friday to Monday or Tuesday to Friday.
The Equestrian Explorer is one of our most popular riding holidays. This three day, three night adventure starts with a gourmet dinner and overnight stay at Poronui Lodge, followed by a day riding through the Pinnacles, Back Basin and Otupua Track with morning tea and picnic lunch en route. Enjoy a gourmet camp-out dinner under the stars and fine New Zealand wines at our Safari Camp.
