Horse Trekking Package
You don't need to be an angler or hunter to experience the magic of Poronui. Many of our guests come simply to enjoy a riding holiday in some of the most diverse, beautiful and unspoilt scenery in New Zealand.
Why You should Experience Horse Trekking at Poronui
While the romantic frontier of the US wild west is long gone, you will find horse trekking at Poronui gives you access to the wide open spaces and untamed beauty of high country New Zealand. Often compared to a “dude ranch” in the US, Poronui is a thoroughly modern and very elegant sporting lodge were guests can experience trail rides of up to six hours a day with a professional local guide.
Enjoy all the comforts of home, gourmet meals and fine local wines. We have also included an optional sleepover at our
Safari Camp so you can get a taste of the early years in New Zealand - when immigrants settled in isolated wilderness beside wild rivers like the Mohaka and Taharua that run through Poronui.
What to Expect During Your Riding Holiday
Expect to ride six hours each day with a professional guide. The rides take you on grassy and pumice tracks through native beech forest, manuka scrub, pine and eucalyptus forest and open grassland. The terrain is varied from steep hill climbs to rolling valleys. Expect river and stream crossings and a swim with your horse at the end of day two. Trails and terrain are suitable for walking, trotting and cantering, even a gallop up the occasional hill for keen riders.
Poronui is a privately owned 8,200 hectare property. Ride through native beech forest, manuka scrub, pine and eucalyptus forest and open grassland. Enjoy breath taking views of the Taharua Valley, Kaimanawa and Kaweka Ranges, and Mohaka River. Gain an insight into this magnificent property and its varied history.

The Riding School at Poronui
The Poronui team of horses are New Zealand station bred. They are chosen for their temperament, steady gate and sure footedness. They are
kept fit and well schooled, ensuring a comfortable ride for all. Our groom brings them in off the hills at the end of winter well in time to get them fit for the season ahead.
Our professional riding guide comes with extensive experience in the schooling of young horses, competing and instructing. She knows the property intimately, is passionate about the outdoors and has indepth knowledge of New Zealand flora and fauna and local history.
Choose to ride in either our English or Australian Stock saddles. Helmets, gloves, boots and chaps are also provided.
