Here is some additional information, but if what you need is not here, please contact us and we will get back to you as soon as we can .

Can I fish at Poronui if I am not a paying guest?

Angler access is provided to the Taharua and Mohaka rivers via four access points as detailed on the Poronui map. Anglers should note that there are some conditions on use of the access. All vehicles must be left at the car park.

The four access points are clearly marked with anglers access signs and are located as follows;

  • At Blake bridge, approximately 2Km from the car park
  • At Goose Flat bridge, approximately 5Km from the car park
  • At “The Rock”, approximately 6 Km from the car park
  • At the Mohaka River (10Km from the car park). Please stay on the poled route to get to these access points. Once in the river please stay within the river bed where possible when moving up or downstream. Privacy zones apply to areas around the buildings on Poronui, please stay 250 metres from buildings within these zones (as marked on the map).
  • Foot access only, no bicycles, motorbikes or 4WD vehicles.
  • No firearms or dogs within the angler access areas.
  • No fires and please remove all litter. The Taharua holds a relatively small number of resident brown trout. To preserve the numbers of trout in this river we encourage catch and release.

Do you cater for special food /dietary requirements, what about kosher?

What do I wear when horse riding?

Approved helmets, boots and knee length chaps are provided for guests to use.

Can I bring my dog?

No dogs allowed.

What about my gun – how do I travel with my own gun or do you have guns I can use?

Travelling to New Zealand with your own gun is a very simple procedure. You will be issued with a temporary firearms licence on arrival. The cost is NZ$25 payable to the New Zealand Police, who are located in the baggage claim area at Auckland International Airport. We have firearms varying from .243 to .300 calibre available for guests to use.

How do I get my trophy mounted and back to the US through Customs?

There are two options:

  • Expedited
  • Fully mounted
For expediting, the New Zealand taxidermist will prepare the head, cape/hide and organise the appropriate documentation for the trophy to be shipped direct to your taxidermist of preference.

If fully mounted in New Zealand the trophy can be shipped directly to you. Allow a time frame of approximately 6 months. The taxidermist will contact you direct when the trophy is ready to be shipped.

Why do you only do catch and release fishing – I want to eat my trout?

At Poronui we practice catch and release to preserve the sustainability of our wild population and ensure there will be brown and rainbow trout on the property for future generations to enjoy. It is important to note that the fisheries of these back country rivers are based upon large relatively old aged fish and that even a small harvest can significantly alter the population structure.

Do you have fishing gear I can use?

We have SIMMS waders and boots available for guests to use. Layered clothing e.g. poly prop or quick drying fishing pants or shorts are the most comfortable to wear under waders. We can also supply rods and reels. We recommend that guests bring their own polaroid sunglasses, rain jacket and cap/hat to wear. All clothing, hats and accessories must be dark, or dull coloured. More information on the clothing and tackle we recommend can be found here .

What are you doing about didymo?

Poronui is committed to preventing the spread of didymo. Boots and waders are dipped and washed each day. Anglers are not legally able to use felt soled boots for fishing in New Zealand. Anglers need to be fully aware of the risk that they may spread didymo if they travel between waterways. For further information got to www.biosecurity.govt.nz or email us and we will help you.

Do you have mobile/broadband access? Can I use my computer in my room?

There is no mobile phone access. However we have wireless internet access in the main Lodge and the rooms, as well as Blake House and The Stables.
