Horse Riding
Come to Poronui for the superb New Zealand Fly Fishing and enjoy some of the best and most diverse horseback riding during your visit.
Our horses have all been selected for their quiet nature and steady manner and are schooled and kept to riding fitness throughout the season. The stable complex reflects the detail that goes into creating a world class facility and guests can expect all tack to be of a similar standard. Lessons are available at the riding school with our qualified instructor.
A Diverse Landscape
A half-day guided trek through the property is thoroughly recommended to anyone with a passing interest in equine matters. Poronui is a remote 16,000 acre property, steeped in New Zealand history, where one can ride in every direction. There are more than 100 miles of roads and trails ideally suited for horse riding on Poronui. These trails make their way through tree-covered hills and cross the gentle streams of the property, offering great views of diverse landscapes, ranging from high-country clad in lush native beech forest to rolling manuka-covered hills and valley floors of open grassland. The views truly capture the uniqueness of Poronui.
On your riding treks, expect to hear the song of native birds, see spectacular scenery and gain insight into the pioneering history of the land. You can expect to see a variety of deer species, native birds and a combination of temperate and sub-alpine flora.

Our Riding Program
Poronui is committed to an excellent riding program. We focus on providing our guests with a quality riding vacation and are especially proud of our New Zealand Station-bred horses. Our horses are well-schooled and responsive to the rider. During the off-season they roam the hills on the property.
Our qualified guides ensure that elusive balance between sensible safety and a fun adventure. They hold current first aid certificates, carry two-way radios and are attentive to the riders with them. Our groups are usually small (one or two guests per guide) which allows guests to ride to the top of their ability. Lessons are also available.
We use English GP saddles and Australian Stock saddles all carefully fitted to the horses.

A Wide Range of Options
Our rides range from an introductory one-hour novice ride to a multi-day trek to our rustic-luxe Safari Camp. There you eat under the stars, toast marsh-mallows on the camp-fire embers and fall asleep to the mesmerising sound of the famous Mohaka River in this completely tranquil wilderness.
